Collection: Arborescens

The Hydrangea arborescens family, commonly referred to as smooth hydrangeas, includes both lacecap and mophead varieties. These hydrangeas are hardy in USDA zones 4 through 9 and bloom on new wood, making them reliable bloomers year after year.

Smooth hydrangeas thrive in full sun in northern gardens but may require some shade in hot and humid climates to prevent stress. They are native to the United States and bloom early in the summer or late spring, with flowers persisting through summer and into fall.

The plants typically grow as wide as they are tall, with mature sizes ranging from 3 to 6 feet. To maintain smaller bloom sizes and prevent stems from flopping, pruning in early spring is recommended. Most varieties, especially the lacecap types, are pollinator-friendly, making them an excellent choice for supporting local ecosystems.

These adaptable and low-maintenance hydrangeas are a great addition to gardens, offering prolonged blooming seasons and ecological benefits.
