Collection: Serrata
The Hydrangea serrata variety is characterized by its smaller habit and slender stems, yet it boasts lush growth and abundant blooms. Native to Japan, this hydrangea family features serrated leaves that develop striking red and burgundy tones when exposed to sunlight as they mature. These hydrangeas are an excellent choice for areas prone to late spring frosts, as their late leaf-out habit typically protects the flower buds from damage. Many modern hydrangea cultivars incorporate Serrata DNA, valued for its hardiness and resilience. Hardy in USDA zones 6 to 9, Serrata hydrangeas begin blooming in late May, continuing into summer before their flowers age to red and gracefully flip upside down, adding seasonal interest. Pollinators love the fertile flowers, too!
