Dear Hydrangeas  PlusŪ Newsletter Subscribers!

Welcome to March 2015.  Happy Pi Day!

I hope everyone enjoyed a little pie or pizza yesterday.  It was an epic pi day for us math nerds.  3-14-15 at 9:26 and 53 seconds.  3.141592653….  Get it?  Yes, I know I’m a nerd but we enjoyed the day.

We are having a beautiful spring here in Oregon.  Hydrangeas are breaking out with their spring foliage in some beautiful colors.  Visit our Facebook page to see a few photos later this week.  We finally got some rain (2 inches) and now our power is out from a nasty windstorm!

It is time to start thinking about fertilizing the hydrangeas.  We recommend a balanced, time-released fertilizer so that the nutrients are released over a 3 or 4 month period.  We sell a great one on our website as well as a great aluminum sulfate product and garden lime to sweeten your soil.  I can ship amendment only orders cheaper than the website calculates via USPS Priority Mail so email me specifically for a better cost of shipping.

Orders are coming in quickly so order early and don’t miss out on those special varieties.  You can order now but ship later.  If something is out of stock, please email me and I’ll let you know if and when I expect it back in stock.

Retail hours this month
Newflash!  Open on Saturday, March 21st.  Hydrangeas are ready for you locals so come on over.  Hours are 10am to 4pm.  Our ‘Official’ first retail event at the nursery is coming up soon.  The annual Spring Break Sale March 27th & 28th with hours 10am to 3pm.  Come buy those hydrangeas that are on your plant list before the local nurseries even have them in stock.

At the Spring Break sale on March 28th, I have again invited several specialty nurseries to come and sell with me.  Joining me are Sebright Gardens and Dancing Oaks Nursery.  Here is a little information about them…

Sebright Gardens carries several hundreds of varieties of shade loving plants – not limited to hosta, fern, and epimedium. Their nursery opens in early April so come see a preview of their 2012 fabulous plants. Sebright Gardens is also a mail order nursery so visit their website.

Dancing Oaks is a destination nursery nestled in the foothills of the central Willamette Valley and grows unusual trees, shrubs and perennials from all over the world. Their plants are also available via mail order.

Come join us.  Hours are 10am to 3pm on Saturday, March the 28th.  Our address is 6543 S. Zimmerman Rd – Aurora, Oregon.

The date for Gardenpalooza is April 11th this year.  Come join us at Fir Point Farms from 8am to 4pm.  The address is 14601 Arndt Road in Aurora, Oregon (97002).    The farm was purchased by Country Grains so expect wonderful fresh culinary treats, warm drinks if it is cold, cold drinks if it is warm and over 40 different garden items and plant vendors.  Do miss the cinnamon rolls and donuts!  Soups are all delicious and the sandwiches are great.

We will be in the greenhouse again so don’t miss us.   As always, I am willing to bring you special varieties to Gardenpalooza if you just ask!  Tell me size and variety and it will magically appear for you!

Transplanting Tip
It is a good time to consider transplanting any of those hydrangeas that may need a little more sun or a little less.  When the hydrangea is dormant or mostly dormant, it is a great time to move these shallow rooted plants.  Just be sure to get lots of the lateral roots and water it well in its new home well.

Cascade Nursery Trail
I’ve joined this group of family-owned, specialty nursery group.  Please visit us on the website and sign up for our newsletter.  We also have a Facebook page and the nine of us are posting pictures and wonderful tips.  Several of these members ship plants, too!
