MOPHEADS
The nickname used to describe the familiar ‘snowball’ bloom hydrangeas. The florets are all sterile forming large colorful globular heads. The name ‘Hortensia’ is often used to describe this type of bloom in much of Europe. Philibert Commerson bestowed the name ‘Hortensia’ on this form of hydrangea in 1771 in honor of a certain lady friend. This type of hydrangea is know for its large ovate leaves that are rich in color that are commonly referred to as ‘old fashioned’ but in recent years have gained well deserved recognition for majestic color.
